seeking info/advice on health insurance

Dear Neighbors,
I need to start "comparison shopping" for a health insurance policy,
and would love your input (good or bad.) Also, any ideas as to how to
participate in a group policy that is not via an employer? Otherwise,
I will need to select an individual health insurance policy. I'm
hoping your pearls of wisdom make this a less daunting task ...
Thanks in advance, Elizabeth

Missed Recycling

We had a problem for several weeks last month on Klingle Ridge after
the changeover in days of collection for both trash and recyclables.
The trash crew found us easily but the recyclables crew did not. DPW
finally straightened it out for us (phone: 673-6833) and provided an
explanation.
The changeover in pickup days evidently was part of an overall
redistribution of effort to better reflect results of population and
development growth over the past few decades. The new routes that
were created did not gibe with the maps that have been in effect for
50 years. Crews had difficulty learning the new routes.

Missed Recycling

Yes - they picked ours up on Klingle Rd. yesterday after they missed it last Friday (our normal day is now Thursday, but that was a holiday, of course). But it happened only after I posted a message on this list and someone from DPW and from Mary Cheh's office saw it. I had called 311 Monday a.m. and had them transfer me to DPW but when I got home that night, nothing had happened. Then Monday night I posted the message on the CP list, and Tuesday I got a call from someone at DPW saying they would pick it up that day and when I got home -- amazingly -- it had been picked up. Someone on the list said in the future to e-mail Johnny.Gaither@dc.gov . I did not do that, but maybe that works.

So sorry I have to disagree. I've had great luck with the electronic
mouse repellers. Mice used to eat all the bars of soap in our never-used
guest bathroom and we haven't seen one bite since we plugged one of the
mouse repellers in.

I have heard of them working for mice, but I doubt they will deter rats. I was directed to install one at my job a few years ago. The result was curious rats darting around it periodically. We renamed it the karaoke machine.

I have a slow cooker/crock pot that I'm happy to give away to anyone who wants it. The catch: it no longer works on the high setting, only the low setting works. But most slow cooker recipes are usually better on the slow setting anyway, so maybe someone would like it? It's stainless steel, programmable timer, 5.5 quart (or so). We're right by the zoo.

Trash and Recycling Collections

Wed Jan 7, 2009 3:19 pm (PST)
My office is aware that over the past month, there have
been significant problems with trash and recycling collections
throughout Ward 3. The difficulties have arisen because of the new
plan of the Department of Public Works to change collection dates.
The changes are designed to make collection more efficient and cost
effective and, once smoothly in place, should improve operations.
But as with any such changes, there have been bumps along the way. I
have been in continued contact with DPW Director, Bill Howland, to
let him know of all of the missed collections that have come to my
attention. He has been responsive and now assures me that by next
week all trash and recycling in Ward 3 will be collected on
schedule. Of course I will continue to monitor the situation. Please
contact me at mcheh@dccouncil.us and/or Mr. Howland at
william.howland@dc.gov if there are any further problems. Thanks

Wedding dress alterations

I searched the listserv and have seen that several people have asked
this question over the years but I couldn't find the responses - so I
apologize for the duplicate inquiry.
I bought a wedding dress off the rack and need to have fairly
significant alterations. It has a layer of chantilly lace that could
snag and tear quite easily and I am worried that it could be damaged
when someone works on it if they are not careful. Does anyone have a
recommendation for a someone who does this kind of work and is
talented and trustworthy?
Thanks so much!

There was a woman named "Pari" (I think Iranian born) who had a little shop in Georgetown near Patisserie Poupon and did expert alterations on my off-the-rack dress. A friend told me she used to work for Vera Wang in town. But the shop has been gone for a couple of years, and I'm not sure if Pari retired or is working somewhere else. Perhaps someone else on the listserv knows.

Hi, My parents are coming from Massachusetts the week of Feb 8-15, and since we live in a small condo (and hotels are so expensive) we're hoping someone might have an place in Cleveland Park that would be unoccupied that week where they could stay for a reasonable price (Less than $100/night?).
Any suggestions/offers would be great.

Anyone looking to get rid of a Microwave?

Hi all,
I just move to my new apartment with my little girl (after splitting with my boyfriend) as you can imagine I have "nothing" and I am still getting together things and my place in general....anyway, I need a microwave (in between others!) and I was wondering if any of you guys want to get rid of "an extra microwave" you might have or anything like that....
I would be happy to pay a nominal amount for it, but I would love even better if I just could take it! ;-)
Many thanks,
Claudia

Re: Cold Stone Creamery

Call me a grinch and a naysayer, but I for one, will not lament the
loss of Cold Stone if it doesn't re-open this summer. At $20 for a
family of four, the ice cream costs more than a monthly salary in many
third world countries, and, frankly, Cold Stone's product isn't very
good. We don't need more of these slick corporate chain restaurants
in our neighborhood. While it would be nice to have a small,
independent ice cream store nearby with real home-made dairy products
(rather than taking the same ice cream you can buy at Giant and
marking it up by a factor of 20X), that is probably too much to hope for.
What we really need, however, is the sort of inexpensive sit-down
establishments that Constantine Stavropoulos has done with his trio of
marvelous restaurants in Adams-Morgan and Woodley Park -- Tryst, The
Diner, and Open City. In addition to providing a community meeting
place, these restaurants have numerous and delicious breakfast, lunch
and dinner options, for barely more money than ice cream costs at Cold
Stone. Perhaps if enough storefronts become vacant, Mr. Stavropoulos
or someone like him will be tempted to start such an establishment in
CP. While I realize there would be issues with the CP restaurant
"overlay" restriction, it is my hope that such an eatery could be
accommodated, given that these sort of restaurants do not raise the
same type of parking concerns as do more upscale restaurants with
valet parking.

I like Cold Stone. It is expensive and I don't go there often, but it's nice to have on a hot summer day. On those days, the line is usually all the way out the door and all the tables on the sidewalk in front are full of families doing probably the same thing they would be doing at Open City, Tryst or the Diner.

Very well said, Warren.
I would certainly like to see something like open city in our

I recommend Robert Morshauser for your computer geek.
I got his name from this listserve, and he is outstanding. He spoke with me on the phone for a half hour (for free), came over right away (he lives in Adams Morgan), and diagnosed and fixed two computers.
He's accessible, smart and a good deal, too ($40 hour).
Save this name - even if you don't need it now, you will be happy to have it for your next computer crisis.
